Marmo Gallery is pleased to present Thought Lights Out, an exhibition by Miranda Mellis. Featuring works from 2019-2024, this exhibition marks the debut of this foundational body of work and is Miranda Mellis's first solo show.
Thought Lights Out, a series of process-based paintings by Miranda Mellis, come from her lifelong engagement with writing, painting, and somatic practices as interanimating practices. She is most interested in intimate, playful, improvisatory, and intuitive ways of art making that allow for surprise.
The abstract paintings in Thought Lights Out fold vortices and thresholds together under hundreds of layers of shape and color, like thin fabrics one laid upon another. Certain shapes recur, such as lobes, which Mellis imagines as kinds of 'ears' that offer receptivity, opportunities for listening, pondering, and 'free floating remediation', a notion from A Dialogue on Love, by Eve Kosovsky Sedgwick.
Mellis is the author of Crocosmia (forthcoming, Nightboat Books, 2025), as well as Demystifications, The Spokes, None of This Is Real, and The Revisionist.
Raised in San Francisco, Miranda lives in Olympia and teaches at The Evergreen State College.
